CRITIQUE 2

During the time of a global pandemic where lockdown orders mandate us to stay at home, Critique 2 attempts to represent the relationship between the "inside" and the "outside." A white frame is used to direct the viewer's attention to the center frame and creates separation between the background. The center frame maintains a singular camera angle contrasting against a moving background of drone footage, creating a unique viewing experience where the world continues to move while the subject stays still. Lastly, Critique 2 aims to create still frames within the video that can be viewed independently at any point but takes advantage of the video format's audio component to provide additional context.

Critique 2 [1]

The first iteration of Critique 2 sees me giving myself a haircut on the roof of my apartment, which is contrasted against drone footage of East Village, New York. Starting with the faint sound of chirping birds, ambient noise, and the buzz of the hair clippers, the video gives way to the sounds of a seemingly resurrected city applauding essential workers, before eventually fading away to reintroduce the eerie silence of a once-bustling city. Random intervals of the center frame progress at a different speed than the drone footage in the background to create a warped sense of time. Critique 2 [1] is ideally played in a loop.

Critique 2 [2]

The second iteration of Critique 2 see me dancing/standing on a roof in Bushwick, Brooklyn, but this time captured as a shadow cast on the apartment buildings across the street. Original audio clips of the video were used. Taken on an iPhone, the center frame slightly vibrates and pulses periodically along with the music.
